The Karnataka Labour Department has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), prohibiting employees of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) from participating in any strike until December 31st, 2025. This directive comes after six KSRTC employees' unions announced an indefinite strike starting August 5th to protest the state government's failure to meet their demands. The notification, issued under the Karnataka ESMA Act 2013, bans all forms of agitation for six months, effective from July 1st, 2025. The unions have been demanding the payment of Rs 1,785 crore for the period of January 1st, 2020, to February 28th, 2025, and a "25% pay hike with effect from January 1st, 2024." The government's action aims to prevent disruption to public transport.
