On November 2, 1944, USAAF fighter pilot Bruce Carr was shot down in his P-51 Mustang deep behind German lines over Czechoslovakia. With no radio, almost no supplies, and winter closing in, the “safe” option was surrender.

Instead, Carr did something no manual could prepare for: he slipped onto an active Luftwaffe airfield, climbed into a Focke-Wulf Fw 190, figured out the controls by trial and error, took off in the dark—then flew low across the front lines while both Germans and Allies tried to shoot him down.
