HLOM Director Ryan Duffy shares the history of the early tools of surveying from Joseph Ellicott’s time and the how they were used in the techniques to create surveys of large areas of land. Included are artifacts from that time period such as compasses, surveyor’s chains, and transits. All of the type of instruments would have been used by Ellicott and his crew during the Great Survey from 1797 to 1800.
