Lantana is a hardy and vibrant flowering plant, widely celebrated for its unique, multi-colored flower clusters and its ability to thrive in hot, sunny conditions. It is a member of the verbena family (Verbenaceae) and is native to tropical regions of the Americas and Africa.

Key Characteristics:

Flowers: The most distinctive feature of Lantana is its flower heads (called umbels), which are dense, round clusters of many small, tubular flowers.

Color-Changing Blooms: A fascinating trait of many Lantana varieties (Lantana camara) is that the individual flowers within a cluster change color as they mature. This often results in a striking multi-color effect within a single cluster, with newer flowers in the center being one color (like yellow or white) and older flowers on the outside changing to another (like pink, orange, or red).

Foliage: The leaves are typically dark green, oval-shaped, and have a rough, sandpaper-like texture. When crushed, the foliage has a distinct and often pungent aroma, sometimes described as citrusy or peppery.

Growth Habit: Lantana generally grows as a woody shrub. Some varieties are upright and bushy, forming large mounds, while others (like Lantana montevidensis) have a trailing or spreading habit, making them perfect for ground cover, retaining walls, and hanging baskets.

Attracts Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers are extremely attractive to pollinators, making them a favorite for butterfly gardens, as well as for attracting hummingbirds and bees.

Hardiness: Lantana is exceptionally heat- and drought-tolerant, blooming profusely from spring until the first frost. In tropical and subtropical climates, it is a perennial evergreen, but in cooler, temperate zones, it is typically grown as a popular summer annual.
