A driver only has to lose concentration for a brief moment and the vehicle leaves its lane.
This can have fatal consequences.
That is why Mercedes-Benz developed the Telligent Lane Assistant.
The Telligent Lane Assistant 'SPA' is an optionally available lane detection system.
The system warns the driver if the vehicle leaves its lane unintentionally.
An acoustic signal sounds from the radio speakers.
It sounds like a high-frequency rattle.
The driver can react immediately by steering the vehicle.
The system operates using an SPA camera attached to the windshield.
It constantly communicates the current position of the vehicle in its lane to the system.
A software program evaluates the images.
The Lane Assistant was developed for driving on freeways and expressways.
For this reason, the system only issues warnings as of a speed of 60 km/h.
If the vehicle speed is lower, no warning signal is issued.
The lane markings must be clearly visible for the SPA to operate optimally.
However, this is not always the case.
Lane markings are sometimes worn off or dirty.
In this case, the camera cannot clearly identify the markings and therefore does not warn the driver.
For example, there are white and yellow markings in roadworks.
The camera is then not able to filter out the relevant lane markings.
The camera cannot detect yellow markings.
In this case, the system therefore warns when the vehicle crosses the invalid white markings.
No warning signal sounds when the driver actuates the turn signal and then changes lane.
The system assumes that the driver has crossed the markings intentionally.
In addition, no warning is issued when the driver brakes.
The camera behind the windshield must be correctly installed and parameterized.
Only then can the SPA assist the driver effectively.
This corrects any geometric errors.
In addition, it ensures that the camera monitors the road and situation correctly.
If an SPA camera is installed, the following operation steps are required when the windshield is replaced.
First remove the SPA camera for windshield replacement.
Unclip the camera from the bracket with a suitable tool.
Disconnect the connector.
Remove the rubber boot.
The SPA is glued to the windshield.
It is therefore not removed, but disposed of with the defective windshield.
A new SPA bracket is attached during installation.
There are two different SPA brackets for the Actros.
Check which type is installed.
In this case, the bracket has an incline angle of 4°.
There is also a bracket with an incline angle of 0°.
The left picture shows a bracket with 0°, the right picture a bracket with 4° incline angle.
Stick on the bracket after replacing the windshield.
Use the installation fixture shown here for correct positioning.
Stick the bracket to the windshield.
Note: The control slots of the installation fixture must be flush with the outer edges of the notch.
Once the bracket is attached, remove the installation fixture.
Install the rubber boot.
Connect the connector and insert the SPA camera in the bracket.
The camera must be parameterized with StarDiagnosis for proper operation.
Select 'SPA Lane Assistant' in the 'Current quick test' menu item.
Check whether one or more of the questions can be answered with 'Yes'.
This is the case here because the windshield was replaced.
In the menu item 'Camera installation height', the system queries the installation height of the SPA camera.
Move the vehicle to driving height before starting the measurement.
Only then can a correct and reliable measurement result be obtained.
Start the measurement.
For a correct measurement result, measure the distance from the ground to the center of the camera lens.
Here is a graphic for clarification.
A value of 242 cm is measured here.
Enter the measurement result in the relevant field in StarDiagnosis.
The menu item 'Camera installation height' asks whether you want to overwrite the parameter value with the value measured on the vehicle.
Confirm with F3.
The system then asks whether a retaining bracket with 4° angle was installed.
This is the case, so confirm with F3.
Confirm the repeat question after selection of the 4° angle with F3 again.
Parameterization of the camera is performed.
Start the automatic data transfer to the control unit.
The SPA parameters have been successfully transferred to the central data memory.
A cracking noise can be heard in the speakers when the test mode is activated.
In addition, the indicator lamp on the instrument cluster flashes.
Perform a test drive.
With the new test mode, driving on a freeway or expressway is not necessary.
A high-frequency rattling sound should be heard clearly when you drive over a side marking.
This is obviously the case here.
The Lane Assistant is working and once again making a contribution to better road safety.
