Unboxing and testing the Hioki DT4256 Digital Multimeter

My current digital multimeter is a UNI-T UT30B which is fantastic for simple DIY work, and has lasted me well over 10 years. It isn't smart model.

I recently bought the Hioki DT4256 to supplement it. This is a modern smart unit, which means it contains a logic processor and firmware etc. This allows it to perform more complicated functions such as auto ranging, AC / DC detection etc.

This new range of Hioki meters also happen to have the industry's fastest response time. By that I mean the time it takes to present the reading to the user. It is much faster than what an analogue multimeter can achieve due to the time required to move the needle.

It comes in a rubber bumper case, however the whole unit doesn't feel very rugged and tough. I wouldn't take one of these out on field work, especially outdoor ones.

It is compatible with accessories such as USB connectivity, AC clamp ammeter probe, thermocouple etc.

On its own, it is able to measure capacitance and has a built in contact-free voltage detector.

The unit is made in Japan.
