Zenkoji Temple is not only the most famous temple in Nagano Prefecture, but also one of the most famous in all of Japan. This is where the first Buddha statue ever to be brought into Japan is stored, so it can be considered the birthplace of Buddhism in Japan! Even today the it is still possible to see the statue, but it’s only opened to the public once every 6 years so you have to time it really well!

If you can wake up early, then I recommend you visit during the o-asaji, the morning service that is held 365 days a year without fail. The starting time varies with the sunrise, so if you visit in winter you can wake up a lot later than if you came during summer. Kneel before dozens of priests and immerse yourself in the mystic and spiritual atmosphere as they chant sutra and play instruments.

Zenkoji Temple is unique in that it is non-denominational, so people of all faiths and religions are welcome to come pray here and participate in the morning service.

How to get there:
From JR Nagano Station there are 3 ways to get there:
1. Catch a train on the Nagano Dentetsu Line to Zenkojishita and walk for about 10 mins (may not be running early in morning for o-asaji in summer)
2. Catch a 10 mins local bus (may not be running early in morning for o-asaji)
3. Walk the 2km straight road for ~30 mins
