Don't let Renfrewshire Council close the library building.

On a cold and snowy Saturday in December 2010, Alasdair Gray, one of Scotland's greatest authors came to Lochwinnoch to show support against the closure of its local library.

Lochwinnoch library is one of the busiest libraries in the authority, but Renfrewshire council have targeted it for downgrading. It's to be moved to a much smaller space that currently provides the local out of school care facility and in turn the children are to be squeezed into the primary school.

Moving the library and after school care will cost tax payers nearly 100 thousand pounds, and give a poorer service in both. The yearly savings are so small that the council doesn't expect to brake even from this move for over 6 years. It has been pushed through without public consultation and the local people of Lochwinnoch are firmly against the closure of the library building.

Lochwinnoch library building was donated to Lochwinnochs people over 150 years ago by Henry MacDowall. Its been a school for 90 years and a library for nearly 60, but it took the council less than 10 minutes to take its decision to close it ..... mostly based on biased figures. Now this community building is to be boarded up or sold off for private use.

As part of the campaign to raise awareness and to encourage the council to change their mind, local people have been organising events, including this reading by Alasdair Gray. To find out more about the Alasdair Gray go here: http://www.alasdairgray.co.uk/ ....... that and read his books of course.
