President Donald Trump is drawing sharp criticism from some of his strongest supporters after suggesting the U.S. could allow as many as 600,000 Chinese students to study at American universities — a move that would more than double the current number.

The issue came up in the Oval Office and again during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, where Trump praised the presence of international students from China.

“I’m honored to have the students from China come here. And we’re just getting along very well with China,” Trump said. He added that many U.S. colleges — particularly those outside the nation’s top tier — would struggle financially without the influx of full-tuition-paying international students.

The remarks mark a sharp contrast from the administration’s own visa policies. Back in May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the U.S. would “aggressively revoke visas” for Chinese nationals with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying in sensitive fields, describing the move as an “America First” policy. Rubio was seated next to the president during Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, where Trump insisted the two remain aligned.

“With that we check and we’re careful and we see who’s there — and Marco wants that. We spoke and we’re in the same position,” Trump said.

Still, the president’s shift has triggered anger from some on the right. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., posted on X: “Why are we allowing 600,000 students from China to replace our American students’ opportunities? We should never allow that.”

Conservative commentator Laura Loomer echoed the criticism, writing: “Now that we are importing 600,000 CCP spies, what’s the point of American students going into STEM?”

China, along with India, has long been one of the leading sources of international students in the U.S. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s daughter graduated from Harvard University in 2014.
