Projections From a Nightmare

In the early 1970s, there was nothing more exciting to me than being able to see a horror film on the television in one of those 10.30 films slots. Appointment with Fear. The X film. Or maybe one of those BBC2 double bills.

Later on, in my late teens, an age where some people grow up, I was lucky enough to manage three or four film conventions (many having much to do with Dez Skinn) and I got to share room space with people like Terence Fisher, whose mild-mannered demeanour left a life long impression on me of how true craftsmen behaved. I also had the fortune to see many of those films previously watched at 10.30, projected on a large screen. Later on still, there was a Hammer film convention I remember at the Kenilworth hotel (with a slightly smaller screen) where it was possible to share chit chat with the likes of Michael Ripper and James Bernard.

I remember the poster of 'Scars of Dracula' on a double bill with 'Horror of Frankenstein' adorning the walls of Belsize Park tube station and the 'now showing' section outside the Classic Hampstead. Even then, I wanted to see these films so desperately. 'Scars' has a bad reputation due to all the sex and sadism. In fact, while lacking the elegance of the early Hammer Dracula's it has a lot going for it with Lee at least starting off as a civilised and polite host before degenerating into the usual sadistic and feral vampire he made his own. 'Taste the Blood of Dracula' has a much better reputation and so doesn't need rescuing but I don't think 'Scars of Dracula' is bad at all.

'Madhouse' was mostly a Vincent Price movie with a main character obviously riffing on his reputation (as in 'Theatre of Blood') but it also featured Peter Cushing, Robert Quarry and Linda Hayden all at the top of their game. Amicus productions gave us so much to be grateful for. Cushing here as Dr Terror and Jennifer Jayne as a vampire bride in 'Terror's House of Horrors'. Cushing again as the antique shop owner in 'From Beyond the Grave'. April Olrich screaming her head off in 'The Skull' while Lee explains the nature of unseen evil. Ingrid Pitt emerging from a coffin in 'The House That Dripped Blood' and Sir Ralph Richardson putting on his finest monk's habit to explain his wayward evil doers they must sit and listen in 'Tales from the Crypt'. And in 'I Monster' we get to see Cushing, the master of prop acting, in a tender scene with a cat as prop. Not many people can look so totally cool holding a cat, fiddling with his glasses and turning the pages of the book as if working out something immensely difficult.

Aside from the shots of Carole Grey in a coffin from 'Devils of Darkness' and a pair of lips, possibly Fiore Argento's, but possibly not, from Michele Soavi's documentary about Dario Argento, the rest is Hammer. I have included the 'Don't look in the eyes' moment from 'The Devil Rides Out' as well as two great vengeance scenes with Susan Denberg in 'Frankenstein Created Women' and Yvonne remain in 'Curse of the Werewolf'
