Thanjavur’s Brihadeeswarar Temple, built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 CE, stands as one of the greatest masterpieces of Dravidian architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Brihadeeswarar, the temple is dominated by a 66-metre granite Vimana, crowned with an 80-ton capstone that showcases brilliant Chola engineering. The towering 3.7-metre Shiva Lingam inside is among the tallest in India. The temple’s walls are filled with detailed inscriptions that record the administration, culture, and achievements of the Chola empire. Spectacular frescoes and sculptures capture the artistic depth of the period. Recognised as part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Great Living Chola Temples,” the Big Temple continues to inspire awe with its scale, symmetry, and cultural grandeur, standing strong as an architectural marvel even after a thousand years.
