WHY The Year 536 Was The WORST YEAR To Be Alive?

For many people around the world, these past 2 years have been tough, but a very particular year could be considered to be the worst year in mankind’s history: year 536!

Why was 536 such a disaster? The year 536 marked the dawn of one of history's darkest periods. Early the year, a volcanic eruption in Iceland led to 18 months of darkness as the volcanic ashes engulfed most of Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. Summers in Europe and Asia became 35°F to 37°F cooler, the sun was blotted out by volcanic ash, resulting in terrible living conditions for the people of that era. The cold and lack of sunlight then led to crop failure and mass starvation across Europe.

Cold and famine caused economic stagnation in Europe, which became even worse when the first outbreak of bubonic plague occurred. Nobody was safe and the disease quickly spread out across the world because of the lack of common hygiene knowledge. Soon, towns became infested with dead bodies piling up in the streets, exposing even more people to the disease.
