उमराव जान का जन्म अमीर (उर्दू: اميرن) के रूप में फैजाबाद में एक मामूली परिवार में हुआ है। अपराधी दिलावर खान को जेल से रिहा करने के बाद उसने बदला लेने का फैसला किया क्योंकि उसके पिता ने अदालत में उसके खिलाफ गवाही दी। खान अमीरन का अपहरण करता है और उसे लखनऊ में बेचने का फैसला करता है। वह एक अन्य लड़की, राम दाई के साथ कैद है, लेकिन दोनों अलग हो जाते हैं जब दिलावर खान उसे लखनऊ ले जाता है।

Umrao Jaan is born as Amiran (Urdu: اميرن‎) to a modest family in Faizabad. After the criminal Dilawar Khan is released from jail he decides to get revenge as her father testified against him in court. Khan kidnaps Amiran and decides to sell her in Lucknow. She is imprisoned with another girl, Ram Dai, but the two are separated when Dilawar Khan takes her to Lucknow.
