The Enigmatic Fort Thompson Mounds: Unveiling Ancient Secrets

Imagine standing along the Missouri River in South Dakota, gazing at a series of mysterious earth mounds stretching six miles. These aren't just random hills; they're the Fort Thompson Mounds, ancient burial sites that have stood for thousands of years. Radiocarbon dating places their construction around 2450 BCE, making them nearly 5,000 years old.

The mounds are believed to have been built during the Plains-Woodland period, beginning around 800 CE. Archaeologists have uncovered stone hearths, pottery fragments, and stone tools within these mounds, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who constructed them.

Despite these findings, the identities of the mound builders remain a mystery. Some evidence suggests they were part of the Mound Builders culture, known for constructing burial mounds across eastern North America. However, the exact origins and cultural affiliations of the people who built the Fort Thompson Mounds are still unknown.

The construction of the Big Bend Dam in the 1960s led to the flooding of much of the bottomland along the Missouri River, including areas near the Fort Thompson Mounds. This development submerged parts of the mounds, making archaeological study more challenging.
