As I took my morning walk through downtown Niagara Falls, a flood of memories washed over me. It had been years since I'd strolled these streets, leaving my hometown in 1988 for Shilo, Manitoba, before moving on to Innisfail and Calgary in Alberta, then Florida, and finally settling in New Brunswick.
The crisp morning air carried the scent of fresh baked goods as I passed by Moodie's Bakery. I couldn't resist stopping in momentarily, the familiar aroma instantly transporting me back to my childhood. As I continued my walk, I found myself in front of the old Poptones location. The storefront was different now, but I could still picture Frank, the owner, behind the counter. He influenced my musical tastes, introducing me to new artists and genres during my formative years.
My feet carried me past the former site of CJRN 710, the radio station that had sparked my passion for shortwave listening, AM DX chasing, and, eventually, my career in the Canadian military and beyond. I chuckled, remembering how I dreamed of being on air one day. As I turned onto Erie Avenue and eventually Bridge Street, I noticed Tony's Barber Shop, where I got my haircut as a youngster and when I returned in 2011. This was where I'd gotten my first haircut, squirming in the chair as my father watched.
Further down Bridge Street, I paused in front of what used to be Simon's Restaurant. The memories of my Dad and I going to Simon's rushing back, along with the experience with Pat and the Niagara Regional Police Pipes and Drums.
As I continued my walk, I couldn't help but notice how much had changed since I left in '88 and how much remained the same. Many storefronts were empty, and the once-bustling streets seemed quieter now in some areas, an attempt at recovery with restaurants, cannabis shops, and other retail outlets emerging. Seeing my childhood haunts either transform or no longer exist was a bittersweet realization.
Despite the changes, downtown Niagara Falls still had an undeniable charm. I wondered about its future. Would it continue to struggle, or could it find a way to reinvent itself and recapture some of its former vibrancy?
As my walk ended, I felt a mix of nostalgia and hope. While my life had taken me far from Niagara Falls - through the prairies of Manitoba, the foothills of Alberta, the sunshine of Florida, and now to the shores of New Brunswick - this place would always hold a special place in my heart. And who knows? Maybe one day, I'd return to find it thriving once again.
