Frozen Waterfalls at Tongariro National Park | New Zealand

Описание к видео Frozen Waterfalls at Tongariro National Park | New Zealand

Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park. It's centred upon 3 volcanoes, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaruhoe. Aside from just skiing and snowboarding at Ruapehu, or doing the famous Tongariro Crossing, there are also great walks and scenic lookouts to enjoy.

During our Ruapehu trip, Turoa (one of Mount Ruapehu's ski fields) was closed due to bad weather, so we decided to do a few walks instead. Little did we know we were in for an amazing treat with some of the most incredible and dramatic views we've seen in New Zealand.

Our first walk was to Waitonga Falls where normally it's suppose to be about an hour and a half's return, but since it was winter with snow and slippery ice on various parts of the track and strong winds especially when we were in the open wetlands area (with the majestic view of Ruapehu), it took us a bit over 2 hours to complete.

The second frozen waterfall was Mangawhero Falls. A very short drive from Waitonga Falls and less than 5 mins return walk to the lookout platform, this was one of the most stunning waterfalls we've come across in NZ due to all the snow and ice.

Both waterfall tracks are on the road to Turoa via Ohakune Mountain Road.

As tradition, whenever we return to Auckland on one of our road trips, if we're passing through Hamilton and get the chance to, we love to stop off at Shanxi Noodles. It's a little Chinese restaurant in a very residential neighbourhood that makes delicious handmade noodles and other great Chinese food. They have photos and an English menu to help with placing your order.
