HOW #KNEEREPLACMENT SURGERY IS DONE: A Step-by-Step Guide to Your New Knee
Understanding what happens during knee replacement surgery can help ease anxiety and prepare you for this life-changing procedure. Here's a comprehensive look at the surgical process that helps millions regain mobility and reduce pain each year. #shorts
PRE-SURGERY PREPARATION
Before entering the operating room, you'll change into a hospital gown and receive either spinal anesthesia (numbing the lower body) or general anesthesia. Your surgeon may also inject numbing medication around specific nerves to help manage post-operative pain. The entire procedure typically takes 1-2 hours.
THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE
Your surgeon begins by making an incision over the knee, usually 6-10 inches long. They carefully move aside muscles and tissues to access the joint. Using precision instruments, the surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage from three surfaces: the lower end of the thighbone (femur), the upper end of the shinbone (tibia), and sometimes the back of the kneecap (patella).
IMPLANT PLACEMENT
The removed bone is replaced with metal and plastic components. The femoral component covers the end of the thighbone, the tibial component caps the shinbone, and if necessary, a plastic button resurfaces the kneecap. These artificial parts are designed to recreate the knee's natural movement. The components are either cemented in place or designed to allow bone to grow into them over time.
ADVANCED SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
Modern knee replacement has evolved significantly. Surgeons now use computer-assisted navigation systems and robotic technology for more precise implant positioning. Some procedures use patient-specific cutting guides created from pre-operative scans. These advances help ensure proper alignment and potentially improve long-term outcomes.
CLOSING THE INCISION
Once the implants are securely in place, the surgeon tests the knee's range of motion and stability. They then close the incision with sutures or staples and apply a sterile dressing. Some surgeons place a drain to remove excess fluid, though this practice varies.
IMMEDIATE POST-SURGERY
You'll spend time in a recovery area as anesthesia wears off. Many patients can put weight on their new knee the same day, often with assistance from physical therapy staff. Pain management includes medications and ice therapy. Some facilities use continuous passive motion machines to gently move the knee.
RECOVERY TIMELINE
Hospital stays typically last 1-3 days, though some patients qualify for same-day discharge. Physical therapy begins almost immediately, focusing on walking, bending, and strengthening exercises. Most people use walking aids for several weeks and continue physical therapy for 3-6 months.
PARTIAL VS. TOTAL REPLACEMENT
Not all knee replacements are the same. Partial knee replacement replaces only the damaged compartment of the knee, while total replacement resurfaces all three compartments. The choice depends on the extent of arthritis and your surgeon's assessment.
REVISION SURGERY
While modern implants are durable, some patients may eventually need revision surgery. This more complex procedure involves removing the original implants and placing new ones, often requiring specialized techniques and components.
Understanding the surgical process helps patients approach knee replacement with confidence. Discuss any concerns with your orthopedic surgeon to ensure you're fully prepared for this transformative procedure.
