Today we will talk about a brief moment in history recognized as the LA Killer Smog of 1943. The issue was first recognized on July 26, 1943. A thick smog invaded the city, and many were unsure of its origins and suspected biowarfare. This thick smog caused people to have runny noses and burning eyes. The smell of the fog was described as bleach, and it came from combustion engine emissions. Later in 1948; 20 people died in Donora, Pennsylvania and 7,000 became ill due to the air pollution. entrepreneur Arnold Beckman and biochemist Arie Haagen-Smit concluded that vehicles burning gasoline were releasing Volatile Organic Carbons into the atmosphere. Their work led to the invention of the catalytic converter which eradicated emissions of nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons from tailpipes. This helps to reduce air pollution from the LA Killer Smog.
