This is the Sonos Ray, the latest soundbar from Sonos. A portable, sleek, all-in-one soundbar that packs impressive sound for your movies, tv shows and music. As well integrating into the Sonos app, allowing for build-in streaming through AirPlay, sound profiles, and trueplay which tunes the sound to your specific room. But the question is, is this the best sound bar that you can get for the price of $279? The Sonos Ray comes in two colours, black and white. I chose black to best match my TV. When it comes to the design the Ray is smaller compared to other soundbars in it’s class including the Sonos Beam and Sonos Arc. This smaller form factor is great if you have a smaller TV or living room. I have a 48” tv and I like how unobtrusive the Ray is, it also leaves more room on my TV console. The Ray features a matte plastic design and grill covering the front facing speakers with a subtle Sonos logo. The back has a pair button and power, optical and ethernet inputs and the top has touch sensitive controls Alight, let’s talk about sound. The Sonos Ray really packs a punch. The sound profile reminds me of Bose’s sound and this is a good thing. I would characterise this by having crisp and detailed highs and thumpy clean lows. For an all-in-one design, the Ray has some good bass even some sub bass. When it comes to the mids, at times I did find myself wanting for a bit more and as a result I found myself having to listen at a slightly higher volume. Don’t let it’s size fool you, the Ray gets loud! 40% is plenty for normal listening in my medium sized living room. I haven’t had to listen to higher than around 60% volume, impressive! Now to the only downside when it comes to sound, soundstage. While the Ray performed better than I initially expected, it is still limited by it’s more narrow width. The sound, while good, does come from a more narrow source and this is something you can hear. Overall, I am happy with the sound the Ray provides. To add to the sound experience, the Ray, like Sonos’s other products, integrates into their ecosystem and app. The app allows you to connect the Ray to wifi, so you can stream and play music right to the soundbar through AirPlay, like a bluetooth speaker. The EQ can also be adjusted in the app to control bass and treble. It also has sound presets. So the question is, is the Sonos Ray worth it? If you are looking for a portable all-in-one soundbar that won’t break the bank and still packs uncompromising room filling sound not just for movies and TV shows but also music, as well as having modern features and app integration, then the Sonos Ray is a soundbar I can highly recommend and I think for the price is very hard to beat!
