Why Are Jeera (Cumin) Prices Shooting Up In Wholesale Markets? | Indian Economy UPSC 2023-24

The price of Jeera or Cumin Seeds in India has shot up and the Market functionaries have attribute this to supply-demand imbalance. Low inventory of cumin with traders, coupled with a dip in production, is what has resulted in Jeera prices being pushed up. The rise in prices of Jeera comes amidst apprehensions of low production due to a drop in the sowing area and low production owing to adverse weather conditions.

The price of jeera in Gujarat have touched a new height of Rs 35,500 per quintal, with the prices increasing by Rs 5,000 in 10 days. Gujarat accounts for around 65 per cent of the India's jeera production while the rest comes from Rajasthan.
