"A great book is a very rare event," says the vibrant bilingual novelist and playwright Kiran Nagarkar. His novels include Saat Sakkam Trechalis, which is considered a landmark in Marathi literature and according to some critics, it reinvented Marathi. His other novels are all in English: Ravan and Eddie, Cuckold, God's Little Soldier and The Extras.
He believes contemporary writing has changed over the years and is asked if current Indian literature has become very commercialised, he says, "If you are going to make compromises or you are going to think of the market first, I will have to part company with you."
When asked whether he takes risks while writing or story telling he says, "I don't want to praise myself by Cuckold was a hell of a risk. Don't forget its about on of the most famous women we have had in India. If you read Cuckold you will notice she is not the focus, it is the Maharaja, at no point is her name mentioned and the interpretation of her is so different."
