In a video posted on Monday, former football player and TV presenter Gary Lineker apologised for resharing a post criticising Zionism that included an emoji of a rat, an image typically associated with derogatory antisemitic tropes.

Underlining that he "abhorred" prejudice and would never intentionally seek to reproduce antisemitic tropes, Lineker nonetheless announced he would be ending his career at the BBC after over 30 years of football coverage.

Lineker had recently been a vocal critic of Israel's war on Gaza and the UK government's complicity in its assault and starvation of the enclave.
