This is the Nikka Pure Malt Black Japanese whisky, and it’s a rich, smoky little number!
It’s called a “pure malt” because it’s all malt whiskey, but not all from the same distillery, however, there might be some non-Japanese whisky blended into this one. It is one of a series of pure malts by Nikka whisky, and it is meant to highlight the malt whiskey from the Yoichi Distillery.
The Miyagikyo Distillery makes Nikka’s light to medium-peated whiskey, while the Yoichi Distillery makes their medium to heavily-peated whiskey. They then use these whiskeys to make a variety of different profiles, blends and final products. This one, the Black, is mostly Yoichi, with a small amount of Miyagikyo, meaning it’s going to be heavier and smokier than the “Red” pure malt.
It comes in at 43%, with no indication of age, cask types, if colour has been added, or if it’s been chill filtered, so let’s just dive right in!
Nikka Pure Malt Black tasting notes:
Nose:
Smoky, with plenty of vanilla fudge, caramel and a nice honeyed sweetness. There’s a slightly savoury note with smoky bacon, but also a touch of white grape.
Palate:
The palate is still sweet, with a sweet, herbal peat character with apple and honey notes. On the second sip, the peated malt was more apparent, with some oak tannins, raisins and vanilla.
Finish:
The finish is relatively short, with dry oak tannins, and a lingering hint of smoky bacon
Overall, this is a nice little whiskey, it’s sweet and smoky, with a hint of fruit and nicely enjoyable. However, I did get it at the distillery for less than €30, and I’ve seen it on sale outside of Japan at closer to €60, which I think would be a bit too expensive for this one.

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails
