These presentations serve as the final deliverable for the NYU Clean Start Professional Certificate in Clean Energy program (https://bit.ly/NYUCleanEnergy). These applied projects were completed in collaboration with an industry host, Urban Energy, to investigate the technologies, markets, and policies around a new clean energy business.

Energy Storage Team:

The new NYISO's dual market participation rules allows smaller DER storage and solar participants to enter the ICap Capacity Markets and wholesale energy markets together. We will explore this rapidly changing landscape as smaller energy enterprises like Urban Energy can become not only market participants, but community leaders on the grid. Our team will present a model of how Urban Energy can lead and host community-based cohorts of small energy storage locations that are low cost and share resources. The model demonstrates how community based relationships and partnerships not only establishes a sustainable-centric brand, but builds value in targeted-areas and advances environmental equity.

Heat Pump Team:

In New York City, building sector emissions outweigh other sectors, at 70% of total annual emissions. As building energy decarbonization gains momentum with increasing policy incentives and financing options, the Clean Heat and Building Electrification team explores the potential for heat pump retrofits to decarbonize medium to large multifamily buildings which constitute 35% of NYC's building stock. The team will present a data-driven case study for a local clean energy startup to expand into the up-and-coming market, through a discussion of the opportunities and challenges in the current policy and market landscape.

The Professional Certificate in Clean Energy is offered in collaboration between the NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs and the Urban Future Lab (UFL) at NYU Tandon.
