This episode of On Air with Caleb Koyo sits down with Agronomist Joash Otiende, who is transforming Kenya’s farming landscape through Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming, snail farming, and innovative approaches to waste-to-wealth agribusiness.
Joash’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and innovation. Starting out with a small pig unit, he grew into a leader in sustainable agriculture. Today, he pioneers insect farming as a solution for animal feed, organic fertilizer, and waste reduction, while also exploring the emerging potential of snail (heliculture) farming.
This session will share more on:
How Black Soldier Flies convert organic waste into high-protein animal feed
The benefits of organic fertilizer compared to chemical inputs
Why snail farming is gaining attention as the next agribusiness frontier
The cultural and community barriers that affect adoption of new technologies
Practical insights for farmers, agronomists, and agripreneurs
With rising food security challenges and climate pressures, agronomists like Joash Otiende are proving that waste-to-wealth farming is more than innovation, it’s the future of agriculture in Kenya, Africa, and beyond.

About On Air With Caleb Koyo.
Growing up in Homa Bay, Caleb Baraka Koyo was always inspired by stories. From a young age, he developed a deep love for newspapers and storytelling, which led him to start writing early on. That passion grew into something bigger when he joined Egerton Radio, and later Hero FM Nakuru, experiences that shaped his voice and direction as a storyteller.
Over the years, Caleb has worked across borders and platforms, reporting for EFM Tanzania, Radio Yetu Nakuru, and currently Crown FM Tanzania. He is the founder of CoELIB Radio, an internet radio station hosted by CoELIB, and also corresponds with AUK Radio in the United Kingdom.
On Air with Caleb Koyo is his next chapter, a platform to pass the mic, create space, and give airtime to youth who are driving change. Whether through startups, art, advocacy, or storytelling, these are the voices reshaping Africa’s present and future. The show is a personal commitment to make sure those voices are heard, seen, and celebrated.
