Fort Montgomery was originally built in 1816 to aid in the defense against British Canada. Due to a survey error it was found to have been built on Canadian Soil. All construction ceased and the site abandoned.
In 1842 the border line error cleared up they started construction of the 2nd fort in 1844. This error nicknamed the site “Fort Blunder”
The new fort was in use till 1880, then mostly abandoned. In 1926 the US government auctioned off the site and land. In 1936 most of the fort was crushed into fill to construct the nearby bridge between Vermont and New York. In 1983 it was purchased by Victor Podd. Podd worked with local historical societies to put the site in the state of New York’s possession. With hopes it would be restored. Despite being offer the site at no cost, a deal could not be reached. The site is still owned by the Podd Heirs and is currently for sale. Just under 3 million and it could be all yours.
This fort has been on my bucket list since I was a teenager. Catching first glimpse of it crossing the bridge over to Rouses Point, NY
