The Colne Valley lies on the east flank of the Pennines and is defined by the River Colne which rises near Marsden and flows towards Huddersfield.

In earlier times (18th century and before) the higher ground was largely farms and hand-loom weavers. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the valley bottom became densely dotted with textile mills (especially worsted cloth), using river water and later steam power.

Transport links played a major part: the Huddersfield Narrow Canal (opened 1811) and the river/canal systems allowed movement of goods and helped the industrialisation of the valley.

The walking route itself has heritage: the official walk booklet of the Circular Walk was first published in 1975, with detailed descriptions by J.W. Bamforth; it was revised in later years (1985, 1992).

The route passes many of these old industrial and transport-heritage features (mills, canals, old weaver cottages), so walking it gives a sense of both the natural and the industrial past.
