Missteps And Blame Game

Residents first noticed something was wrong with their water supply as far back as October last year, when local complaints began pouring in about acidic, dirty water and a foul stench in the Narmada water being delivered to their taps. But despite repeated warnings, meaningful action was delayed.

Official records show that in 2025 alone, the city received over 200 complaints related to water quality, especially from Zone 4, which includes Bhagirathpura. Of the contamination cases assigned to municipal engineers, only a handful were resolved, while many were closed without proper action. By mid‑December, symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration began spreading through the community. Residents reported that “90 per cent of Ward 11 was falling ill,” yet the administration only began responding after deaths were reported in late December.

Investigation On Contaminated Water

Investigations now show that sewage mixed with the drinking supply likely caused the outbreak. In one alarming instance, a toilet was built directly over a main water line without a safety tank, allowing waste to leach into the pipeline and contaminate the water that flowed into homes. Efforts to fix aging water pipelines were significantly delayed by bureaucracy. A file to lay a new Narmada water line was prepared more than a year ago, but was reportedly kept pending for months before tenders were finally issued just days before the crisis became fatal.

This tragedy highlights the dire consequences of neglecting basic public health infrastructure and ignoring repeated warnings from residents. Authorities now face intense pressure to overhaul water safety systems and restore trust in civic institutions
