What is Maher programme?
"Not a traditional teacher-student education, but a unique approach that does not rely on a teacher!”
The original method of learning the Qur’an has always been through a well-versed teacher who has mastered the recitation of the Qur’an. This methodology stemmed from the teachings of the Prophet (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who used to receive revelation from the angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) and would then teach it to his companions. The companions then taught it to their students exactly as it had been taught to them and so on until the Qur’an reached us, without any kind of distortion, changes, or edits to the original Arabic revelation.
Unfortunately, in our present time, the opportunity for many Muslims to learn Qur’an under a well-versed teacher can be difficult, especially in non-Arab countries. As a matter of fact, other points of difficulty exist as well; the lack of proficiency from the available teachers, their inability to speak the language of the student, or distance and time restrictions that prevent teachers and students from meeting face to face, just to name a few.
With the increasing number of non-Arabs wishing to learn to recite the noble Qur’an while accounting for the many challenges that prevent them from doing so, we felt a sense of responsibility and duty toward solving this matter. Therefore, in response to this issue, we prepared an integrated program in the English language which contains everything that anyone needs to recite the Holy Qur’an without the need for a teacher or know any Arabic! And the best part is that the program is available anywhere and at any time. All that is needed is access to the Internet.
This program is called “Mahir” meaning “skilled”. It was named as such because of the narration of the Prophet (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), in which he said: “The one who is skilled in the Qur’an is with the honorable and righteous (angels).” The meaning of the hadeeth is that the one who masters the recitation of the Noble Qur’an and grasps its memorization will be with the honorable angels. We ask Allah to make us among the people of Qur’an who recite it, act upon it, and teach it to others for His sake.
This program has been split into two main sections:
A. The Visual Section:
This consists of 28 audiovisual lessons that explain all the materials the student requires to master the recitation of the Qur’an with Tajweed.
All the topics in these lessons, along with the context of each, have been extracted by academic specialists and experts in the art of recitation of the Qur’an and its skills. They relied on a selection of old and new sources on the arts of the Arabic language, Tajweed, and script of the Mushaf. This includes some of the following works: Al-‘Ain by Al-Faraaheedi, At-Tahdeed by Ad-Daani, Ar-Ri’aayah by Makki, Hirz al-Amaani and Al-‘Aqeelah both by Ash-Shaatibi, and other sources.
During this process, they also simplified the lessons as much as possible. This was achieved by concentrating on the main points, leaving out that which was not relevant to the student, and all the while maintaining gradual advancement and progression of the lessons. In addition, the information within the lessons is reinforced with high-quality audio pronunciation from the Qur’an.
B. The Practical Section: (Education website link: http://maher-quran.com)
This section consists of dozens of examples from the Qur’an for each of the 28 lessons. These high-quality audio lessons were tailored specifically for the student to implement and build upon that which they had previously learned, and all with the mere click of a button! These audios can be repeated, because as Ibn Khaldoun said: “The foundation of accurate pronunciation is listening correctly.”
While compiling this section, an effort was made to bring examples from the Qur’an to fulfill the ultimate objective of the program; to teach students how to recite the Qur’an. As such, the examples are written the same script as the Mushaf, so as to not confuse students between the traditional and modern Arabic script.
The Practical Section includes quizzes for each lesson so the student can gauge his or her understanding of the material.
A group of specialized scholars in the field of the Holy Qur’an and its sciences commended and applauded this program. Among these distinguished individuals is the famous and former dean of the College of the Holy Qur’an at the Islamic University of Madinah, Professor Dr. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Sudais.
In your hands, now, is the easiest and fastest way to learn to recite the Holy Qur’an. You are one step away from perfecting the recitation of the Qur’an!
While you’re learning and benefiting from this program, remember the authentic hadeeth of the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “The one who is skilled in the Qur’an is with the honorable and righteous (angels).”
