The Chūō Line is one of the five core radials out of Tokyo, heading to the west. As one of the nation's great railway lines, it runs from Tōkyō Station in the east all the way to Nagoya in the west, although JR East only serves the portion between Tokyo and Nagano. Between Mitaka and Ochanomizu, the corridor is quad-tracked, allowing for dedicated local trains on the Chūō-Sōbu Line and rapid trains on the Chūō Rapid Line.

The rapid trains, known for their distinctive orange and equally distinctive tendency to be overcrowded (there is an ongoing project to add two more cars to each train), have numerous different termini in the west, with most services running to Tachikawa before branching off to Ōme or Ōtsuki, with short-turns at Takao, Hachiōji, and Tachikawa. There used to be additional through-service patterns in the past, though these have since ceased service. West of Tachikawa, Chūō Main Line trains provide additional service towards Kobuchizawa.

This video features clips from the famous outlook at the Hijiri Bridge (though not during a weekday or during weekday rush hour, so no triple/quadruple/etc shots with like 5 trains at once), as well as from other points along the line within Tokyo Prefecture.
