Sometimes four track cassette recorders will have one or more tracks which record or playback quieter than the others - more often than not, I have been able to remedy this issue by adjusting trim pots on the printed circuit boards which control the gain of the signal entering or leaving the cassette.

Although the recording and playback levels seem pretty even on this Tascam 424 MkIII to begin with, I still adjust these to make the readings on the LED meters meaningful - this allows the user . to judge the level of of drive and tape saturation they are getting during recording.
