In 2023 the world was witness to the massive success that was Barbie. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie ended up being the highest grossing film of its year, and quickly became a staple for the female narrative in film. This begs the question, why did Barbie succeed where other female led films, such as The Marvels flopped? Thus, we must explore how female archetypes in Hollywood have evolved, the consequences of remakes, and the value of innovation when it comes to female representation in Hollywood. My name is Isla Walker and I hail from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I am active on my school’s Mock Trial and Debate team, play in our Chamber Orchestra, and enjoy volunteering with Key Club. In my free time I love watching movies with my family, which includes complaining about all the recent remakes, as well as enjoying the Barbie movie in July. This eventually inspired my talk: Bye Barbie: Commercialized Stereotypes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
