One common cause of acid reflux disease is an abnormal stomach called a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the upper part of the abdomen and the LES travel over the diaphragm, the muscle that separates your abdomen from your chest. Normally, a diaphragm helps keep acid in our stomach. But if you have a hiatal hernia, acid can build up in your throat and cause symptoms of acid reflux.
These are other common risk factors for acid reflux disease:
