With their ‘Matrix Trilogy,’ the writing/directing sibling duo, the Wachowskis, were determined to blow audiences minds in every conceivable way. The first ‘Matrix’ film still stands as one of the greatest pieces of modern action cinema. And although its two sequels ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ weren’t nearly as well received, they still contain their fair share of impressive set pieces and ideas.

The Wachowskis were obsessed with filling each frame in each movie with all kinds of hidden details and amazing visual references and Easter Eggs. Some of these are more obvious, such as Keanu Reeves paying tribute to Bruce Lee with a subtle nose rub. There are also numerous references to Norse mythology and some overt Biblical references, such as Neo’s Messiah complex and a number of Bible verses.

There are also more subtle items, such as the rain in ‘The Matrix Revolutions’’ climactic fistfight between Agent Smith and Neo. If you were lucky enough to catch the film on an IMAX screen, you would have noticed that the rain also contained the Matrix code, suggesting the breakdown of the entire system. There’s also the inclusion of one of the Wachowskis’ biggest influences: the novel ‘Simulcra and Simulation’ makes an actual appearance in the film. They even found a way to give cameos to some of their favorite philosophers and crew members.
