California’s lost lake once dominated the center of the state, yet most Americans have no idea it ever existed. Long before modern maps, Lake Corcoran flooded California’s Central Valley, forming a massive inland sea created by heavy rainfall and glacial melt. As water levels rose, the lake eventually burst through to the Pacific Ocean, reshaping the land forever.

What remained was Lake Tulare, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and one of the biggest in the entire United States. The drained valley became some of the most fertile farmland in America, turning California into an agricultural powerhouse. But with limited rainfall, government-backed water diversion projects began draining Lake Tulare to irrigate crops.

Despite warnings, dams and canals continued to redirect water away from the lake and its rivers. Over time, this decision caused Lake Tulare to vanish almost completely from the map—erasing one of America’s greatest natural lakes due to human intervention.
