Amritsar is renowned for its exuberant Punjabi food. Just like the plethora of veg options, it also offers a galore of mouth watering non veg dishes. In today's episode, which is the 2nd of the 5 parts Amritsar Food Tour Series, we are taking you on an exciting non veg food tour featuring some of the city's iconic non veg destinations, that you just can’t afford to miss during your visit.

The first stop was Milkhi Ram Di Hatti in Guru Bazaar. This nondescript eatery serves a limited menu consisting of biryani and non veg curries. Here we tried a scrumptious combo of mildly flavoured rice and rich mutton curry. The mutton was tender and juicy while the gravy was spicy and very well balanced. What a hearty experience it was to try it hot. An interesting thing about this combo is that here they call it biryani which it is not. It's probably because the taste is quite similar to a spicy biryani.

The second stop was Billa Chicken inside Hakiman Gate. Run by a young fellow, this popular stall serves just tandoori chicken and roti. The grilled chicken is then served mixed with a generous amount of melted butter and a zesty spice mix. We absolutely loved the tender and succulent chicken pieces. Moreover, it testifies the expertise of the young owner as making a juicy tandoori chicken required great acumen.

The third stop was Pal Dhaba which is renowned for their dhaba style non veg dishes. It is a small eatery with an old world ambience. We opted for their bheja fry or brain curry and kharode or trotters curry. Resembling scrambled eggs in texture, the bheja curry was rich and spicy. Their trotter curry was thick and spicy. Trotters are considered to be nutritious and hence they are much preferred in this region. Overall we enjoyed the flavours that were whipped up with pre cooked gravies and a special garam masala.

The fourth stop was Beera Chicken Corner. Located on Majitha Road, it is renowned for their grilled chicken and keema naan. Unlike the fancier griller chicken, this one had very less use of spices. The maximum flavours comes from the chicken that is roasted to perfection. This iconic recipe has been around since 1972. Stuffed with nearly a quarter of spiced keema, their keema naan was thick, crusty and spicy. One can easily have it with the complimentary chutneys. An interaction with the owner enriched us with so many anecdotes about this legendary palace.

The fourth stop was Makhan Fish and Chicken Corner which has garnered a huge reputation for it’s supreme quality of crispy fried fish. They also serve many more dishes but true fish aficionados come here just for their fish fries. Thin spiced besan batter coated Sol and singhada fish are fried in mustard oil and garnished with a special chaat masala. Makhan Fish Corner is a landmark in Amritsar’s culinary map.

The last stop was charming chicken Corner. We went their for their special butter chicken but since it was over we first tried some tangdi, malai chicken and crispy chicken. But the gracious owner made sure that we didn't leave without having their special butter chicken so he made a small batch just for us. Taste wise it was absolutely different from the one that we North Indians are familiar with which has loads of butter, cream, garam masala and a note of kasuri methi. The one we tried here was more heavy in flavour and it didn't feel excessively buttery or creamy.
