Searching for John Atkins – A Family’s 50-Year Nightmare

The disappearance of a loved one leaves a wound that never truly heals, a question mark that shadows every milestone, every holiday, and every quiet moment of reflection. For Scott and Marylin Atkins, the vanishing of their father, John Atkins, in October 1973 turned their world upside down. Today, nearly five decades later, they joined Adventures with Purpose (AWP) on the waters of the Sacramento River to search for the man they’ve missed every day since.

The Man They Called Dad
John Atkins was more than just a father—he was the glue of his family. A hardworking salesman, John was known for his gentle humor, his dedication, and the love he poured into his family. On that fateful day in 1973, he kissed his children goodbye and left to close a deal near the Freeport Bridge. He never came home.

For Scott and Marylin, the years have been filled with a deafening silence. Questions without answers. Memories without closure.

“I was just a kid when my dad disappeared,” Scott shared, his voice trembling with emotion. “I remember his smile, his laugh. I remember how he hugged me and told me to take care of my sister. But what I remember most is the emptiness when he didn’t come back.”

A 50-Year Mystery
John Atkins was last seen driving a company vehicle—a GMC Sprint, a unique car-truck hybrid that should have been easy to spot. His family suspected a medical emergency, like the heart attack he had previously survived, caused him to veer off the road and into the Sacramento River. But with no guardrails in place at the time and no witnesses, his disappearance became a cold case that haunted his children for decades.

“We grew up with so many ‘what-ifs,’” Marylin explained. “What if he needed help and no one was there? What if we’re looking in the wrong place? What if we never know?”

The Search Begins
Today, AWP turned their attention to the stretch of the Sacramento River between the Freeport and Courtland Bridges, where John was last seen. Using advanced sonar and dive equipment, the team scoured the riverbed, looking for any sign of the GMC Sprint.

Scott and Marylin joined the search, sharing stories of their father as the team worked tirelessly to identify submerged vehicles. Each sonar ping was a potential breakthrough. Each dive was a step closer to finding John and bringing him home.

Moments of Hope and Heartbreak
As the sun glinted off the water, the boat fell quiet. A sonar hit revealed a vehicle partially buried in silt, its shape matching the profile of the GMC Sprint. For Scott and Marylin, hope.

The dive team descended into the murky depths, their movements deliberate and focused. The vehicle, sadly, was not John’s. It was another piece of the river’s history, another untold story. For Scott and Marylin, it was another bittersweet moment in a lifetime of waiting.
