I'll help you better understand WHY we're scared of speaking on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Register for one of my FREE communication trainings: https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/
1. Where does the fear of communication come from? (0:44)
The best place to start in order to understand where our fear comes from is with the following question:
Where have we given most of our presentations and why do we give them in the first place?
The answer to this question is school, of course, most of the presentations we’ve given in our lives are from high school, college and university, and all of them were mandatory, not optional. We won’t wake up one morning and say, hey Dany, want to get breakfast and present all day? We just don’t do that.
And in those high school presentations, these 3 things tend to occur.
You don’t get to choose the topic; it’s often one that you’re stuck with.
You are FORCED to do these presentations; they're all mandatory - no choice.
You also learn that its a punishment; if you don't do well, you get PUNISHED.
Not the best situation here. In other words, in our entire lives, everyone of our runs at presentations and public speaking were about presenting stuff we aren’t passionate about to people who don’t want to hear us and stressed out teachers who can’t really give us feedback on how we did.
No wonder we’re afraid of public speaking, what else could we expect given this situation?
2. Seeing Public Speaking as Fun, Rather than a Chore (2:42)
Most of us don’t really get what public speaking is for. We see it as a chore, as an obligation as something we need to do, or we get punished for it and that’s normal because every presentation we’ve ever given in our lives have been tied to a result e.g. the school presentation we need to do well in to get a good grade to the work presentation we have to give to get that next promotion. Public speaking is always tied to STRESS and ANXIETY, so it makes sense that we’re always STRESSED and ANXIOUS, since presentations NEED to be great, instead of it just being fun thing to do.
In my college days, instead of watching sport games like most guys did my age, I watched presentations with my friends and ate pizza doing it. We made it fun, we criticized presenters in a fun way in the same way we do when we watch sports. We’re enjoying ourselves, we’re turning public speaking into a sport rather than a to-do list, a hobby rather than a chore, and a calling rather than a nightmare.
3. Understanding the Purpose of Public Speaking (4:57)
The biggest cause of all our fear of public speaking, I’d add, is that most of us don’t really get why we need to get better at this skill and it has NOTHING to do with presenting better at work or at school, though those things are important, they’re not very motivating to get us really serious about communication.
The main reason the top speakers in the world love public speaking is because they have a reason why they want to be on that stage. It’s not for the fame, the prestige, the glamour like most of you might think it is, it’s for service, it’s to help people and make a difference.
