Creating and Using a Flexible, Non-Destructive Edge-Detecting Mask

When you want to constrain adjustments to edges (such as in sharpening), you could use the Filters/Detect/Detect Edges, but you are unable to change what 'edges' are detected. Here is a far more controllable way to detect edges and turn this into a mask for not only sharpening but also enhancements to your image.
