WELCOME:
PRELUDE : Louis Menendez
CALL TO WORSHIP:
High on the barren slopes, shepherds watched their flocks. Alone with their sheep, they scratched out a
living, and hope seemed so far away. But...the angels sang; the shepherds marveled.
And a child named Jesus was born to them.
Over dunes, dry and bare, harsh winds in the faces, the Magi trudged along. Their trip seemed so endless,
and the star far away... but the camels struggled, the Maji journeyed,
And a child named Jesus is born to them.
In our world today, like shepherds and Magi, we struggle in our lives. We face winds of change, broken
dreams, and difficult times. Hope seems so far away... but in the distance, we see a dim light. The angels
sang, the shepherds ran, and the Maji followed the star. Like them, we recall God’s promise of hope, and
in our hearts, we too, follow the star.
And a child named Jesus is born to us.
OPENING PRAYER:
Beloved in Christ, let it be this Christmas Eve that we gather to hear again the message of the
angels and that in our hearts and minds, we go to Bethlehem to experience what had come to pass,
along with the shepherds, and the Maji, who adore the Christ Child in his mother’s arms. Let us
also remember this night to pray for the needs of the world: for war-torn countries, where there is
constant strife; we pray may peace be found, and for those persons who are cold, hungry, lonely or
oppressed, may relief come to them, and may comfort be near for those who live in pain, illness or
grief. As followers of Jesus, may we help those in need and may we, too, adore the One born to us
this night. In the Name of Emmanuel, God-with-us. Amen.
