Damon Galgut on his life and work

From the outside, there was nothing unusual or remarkable about the Swart family from any other ordinary white Afrikaner farm household until you got to know them. Set in a farm outside Pretoria, Damon Galgut’s 2021 Booker Prize winning book, The Promise, is a themed story, centred on a family funeral, each one happening in a different decade. It's also a story of a family caught up in a changing country faced with historical apartheid era injustices. This is Galgut’s ninth novel since he started writing at the age of 17. He is considered one of South Africa’s most distinguished writers of our time.
