Every now and then a project takes an unexpected turn, and this one was a first even for me. Not only was I asked to design the garden, but through the design process, the clients invited me to redesign the back of the house as well. Their 1960’s bungalow, though full of potential, was badly in need of a refresh. Fortunately for the clients, I already knew what I’d do.

The garden I had designed was Scandinavian-inspired, filled with sweeping curves, swathes of perennial planting, and a sense of vibrancy and movement. For the house to do it justice, it needed to become a backdrop rather than a distraction. We chose burnt larch cladding for its texture and timeless appeal, wrapping the back of the home in natural warmth while anchoring it firmly in the present day.

The old extended entry was removed, replaced with a stylish new boot room, and French doors were added on the right side of the property for easy utility access. A fresh coat of black paint unified the look, softening the lines and allowing the planting to take centre stage.
