As usual, I was using my 10ft 4wt rod with a 4 wt. floating line (WF4F). 9ft 4x tapered leader. With a triple surgeons knot, I add about 5ft of 4x tippet. I then add about a foot of 5x tippet, connected with a triple surgeons knot (when adding split shot, I will place it above this knot). I then tie on my first fly using a clinch knot. I add about 20" of 6x tippet to the bend of the hook, using another clinch knot. Lastly, I tie on my second fly using a clinch knot as well. Pretty basic. I personally like long leaders so that when I'm high sticking, I can easily keep my fly line and leader off the water. Also, if I find a deep hole, I will have plenty of leader to get down deep without having to add more tippet. Another reason for the long leader is that when I'm high sticking, the belly of the leader weighs a lot less than the belly of fly line. The weight of the leader will not pull the flies towards me as they are drifting. Thus, the flies will drift more naturally. When high sticking, I usually only have a few inches of fly line out from the tip of my rod. A 10ft rod also helps with reach. When it comes to setting up your rig, it's going to come down to personal preference. Everyone has a different style. Play around with different set ups to see what works best for you.
