Hello. This is the fourth video for this series. I’m working with close-up filters and small toy vehicles.
For this video I’ll use a ’57 Chevy 1:64 scale Hot Wheels. This one has letters all over the place. I got a van with a similar design which I used in the previous video. I believe they both belong to a set of similar cars called HW Art Cars. They form a word or phrase if you put them together and look at the larger letter.
The writing around the car is what made me pick this car. I don’t like the color that much but I think I can make it work. I think focusing on the letters can make a more interesting image.
For this series I want to keep working with the close-up filters. I’ll use the Plus+3 Circular Filter again. I’ll also use a 28-80mm lens on the Digital SLR.
The plan is to keep these first videos simple. I’m using just a couple of backgrounds. A piece of white fabric and a piece of wood painted black.
For lighting I’ll use a small flash light, a panel LED portable light and a lamp. Again I’ll start with just a few lights and add more as I go. At this point I want to see what works and what doesn’t and take it from there.
One thing about working with close-up filter is that the focusing is harder. Having a tripod helps a lot when trying to focus in a particular area. Not everything will be sharp and moving the focusing ring a bit can make a big difference.
I put the car on top of the background I choose. Then I turn a lamp on or off. I use the small flashlight to get light in smaller areas. The LED portable panel I move around to get even light and reduce the shadows. I don’t want to completely get rid of the shadows but I want to minimize them a bit.
If at some point in the future I want to do sketches from this project I want to have a few things in place. I like having shadows in the images I work from. I think I’ll have a good selection of images to choose from.
