IN THIS EPISODE: I worked at Marvel Productions a long time ago. I was on Muppet Babies as a storyboard clean up artist, and when the season was over, the studio moved me to the Development Department. Well, I actually stayed in the same office at the same desk, but my check came out of a different department. The studio was going to pitch ideas to the networks for new series. They had Mitch Schauer draw up some initial sketches for a few, and some other artists do drawings on other ideas. These drawings were given to people like me to flesh out and make more drawings so that bigger and better color drawings could be done as more eyewash art to show to the networks. This is how shows were sold to the networks back then. I was given two ideas to work on. One was about a flying seal, and the other was this one, The Secret Garden. They wanted me to work on the background designs, which was a great change of pace from what I usually get hired for. The little girl lived in a Victorian house at the end of the block with an elderly relative, either an aunt or her grandmother. Story takes place in New York, so I needed reference materials for Brownstone buildings and Victorian Mansions. I bought two books from this great used book store on Friar Street in Van Nuys, I only have one them, I’m pretty sure I gave the other one away. So watch this video to see how I used the book to make the BG designs for this project. These days you guys probably just look everything up on the internet. Didn’t exist back when I did these drawings. In a way it was more fun to buy the books or go to the library to get the references. Keep drawing.
