Join Lyle Goldstein, Visiting Professor of International and Public Affairs, for a conversation with Sayo Saruta, President of the New Diplomacy Initiative, a think tank seeking to inspire a diversity of voices in political and diplomatic issues between the United States and Japan as well as throughout East Asia. This is the first event in a series of talks about the China-Japan relationship, “Stepping Back from the Brink: An Exploration of Contemporary China-Japan Relations.”

Ms. Saruta is an attorney at law (Japan and the State of NY, USA), President of New Diplomacy Initiative, and actively works on diplomatic and political issues based in Japan and in Washington D.C., particularly to bring Japan’s various voices in these issues into the fields of diplomacy between Japan, the U.S. and other East Asian countries. The area of her specialty is diplomatic issues, including the U.S.-Japan security system, U.S. military bases in Japan, as well as Japanese policy towards East Asia. She has given advice to Japan’s top Diet members and local governments.

Her articles frequently appear on newspapers and magazines including the Asahi newspaper and AERA. Previously, she worked with Amnesty International and Human Right Watch. She holds a LLM from Columbia University Law School and a MA in International Relations from American University in Washington, DC.

Join us for additional talks in this series on October 31 with Gui Yongtao, and on November 10 with Mike Mochizuki.
