The Pirates of Penzance is a delightful comic opera brimming with wit, romance, and topsy-turvy adventure. When young Frederic finally escapes his apprenticeship to a tender-hearted band of pirates, he dreams of an honest life. Until he meets Mabel, the spirited daughter of Major-General Stanley. Their instant love propels them into a whirlwind of mistaken identities, absurd duty, and rollicking hilarity. Will Frederic’s sense of honor doom his happiness, or can true love outwit the pirates at last?

Stafford Opera Troupe was founded in 2016 by a team of dedicated volunteers. Our mission? To bring the beauty of opera to the students and community of Stafford, Fredericksburg, and the surrounding areas.

It all started in Mrs. Bonita Keene’s chorus classroom at Mountain View High School in Stafford County. After several alumni performed for her students, the young singers’ responses to learning about and hearing opera were so enthusiastic, it made us realize how little opportunity they have to experience opera and classical voice in their hometown - and we knew that had to change!

So, we teamed up to craft an experience that would allow young singers to delve into the world of opera, operetta, and musical theater, developing their musical abilities and becoming well-rounded performers.

Stafford Opera Troupe found its home at Mountain View High School for four years. After a break due to the pandemic, we are excited to return to the stage for a second year in a row partnering with the University of Mary Washington, and bringing The Pirates of Penzance to life in beautiful Seacobeck Hall.

Stafford Opera Troupe wouldn't be possible without the generosity of our supporters; we are funded through community donations. We believe students shouldn't have to pay thousands of dollars in order to grow their craft. In order for us to remain tuition-free, we depend upon the community to come alongside us and help cover the costs of accompanists, production expenses, promotional needs and more.
