Before Islam emerged in the 7th century CE, Arab society lived through what’s often called the Age of Ignorance, or Jahiliyyah. This period was shaped by powerful tribal loyalties, a patchwork of religious beliefs, and thriving trade routes that ran through key cities like Mecca. Life back then revolved around clan identity, and society was deeply patriarchal—men held most of the power, while women had limited rights. Religion was mostly polytheistic, with people worshipping many gods and idols. Despite the chaos, this era also laid the groundwork for the dramatic social and spiritual transformation that came with the rise of Islam.
