New Zealand bounced back in style to level the three-match series 1-1 with a clinical 7-wicket victory over India at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, Rajkot. Chasing a target of 285, the visitors pulled off their highest-ever successful ODI run chase against India in India, reaching the mark with 15 balls to spare.
The chase was masterfully anchored by Daryl Mitchell, who played a spectacular unbeaten knock of 131 off 117 balls*. He found an able partner in Will Young (87), and together they stitched a match-defining 162-run partnership for the third wicket. Despite early breakthroughs by Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna, the Indian bowlers struggled to contain Mitchell's counter-attack. A dropped catch when Mitchell was on 80 proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the hosts.
Earlier, India was invited to bat first and posted 284/7 in their 50 overs. The innings belonged to KL Rahul, who silenced critics with a gritty and sublime 112 off 92 balls*. Coming in at No. 5 when India was reeling at 118/4, Rahul anchored the middle order and accelerated brilliantly at the death, reaching his century with a six. Shubman Gill (56) provided a solid start, but the experienced duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to convert their starts. New Zealand’s Kristian Clarke was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets.
The series now moves to Indore for the decider on January 18, with both teams looking to clinch the trophy.
