In this reflective interview (Part 2 of 2), Professor Gerry Helleiner discusses some of the early work of UNU-WIDER. Key themes emerge including the challenge to the Washington Consensus and the need for Southern voices in analysis and South-South interaction.

The policy debates about adjustment and imposed austerity – considered developing country issues until recently – have a renewed relevance also for European economies in the post 2008 economic climate. Helleiner had standing both within both UNU-WIDER as well as the World Bank and was able to play an important role in the often tense policy dialogue – as he reflects here.

Helleiner provides insights into UNU-WIDER’s research projects on stabilization, trade and non-traditional exports, stressing the need to recognize the diversity and complexity of policy responses.
